The KIC Prophet Training is a four hour class designed to train an oven, furnace, or wave solder machine operator to use the KIC Prophet Thermal Monitoring System with the WinKIC Windows (TM) compatible software. The goal of the class is to train up to three people to:
- Run a profile using the SlimKIC Thermal Profiler or a KIC TC Extension.
- Analyze the profile to quickly determine if it is within the specifications.
- Use the "Profile Prediction" feature of the software to quickly establish the new oven settings required to bring a profile within spec.
- Setup an Virtual Profile (VP) to continuously monitor the process to eliminate the need to run verification profiles on a regular basis.
- Recognize when the KIC Prophet has detected a change in the process that may generate rework and requires that the profile be checked and the oven possibly be adjusted or serviced.
- Review and analyze the thermal data that is continuously stored by WinKIC, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
The KIC Prophet Training class will be broken up into two distinct 2 hour segments. The first part will occur in a classroom setting where the students will review the KIC hardware and will learn critical software features by running a step-by-step software tutorial on the computer. The second part will be hands-on instruction on the factory floor where the users will actually run a profile and setup an Virtual Profile.
The following items must be available at the start of the class:
- A conference room for the first 2 hours of the training session. The room should include a PC with the WinKIC software already installed. The larger the PC monitor, the better.
- At least one copy of the WinKIC Prophet Quick-Start Manual.
- A printed circuit board (or other product) with thermocouples attached and ready to be profiled.
- The KIC Prophet Thermal Monitoring System and the WinKIC software installed on a thermal process on the shop floor. Ideally production should not be running during the 2 hour training session, however, much of the material can be covered even with production up.
The following materials will be supplied by the KIC instructor:
- Three full color WinKIC Software Tutorial handouts.
During the training session, the KIC Instructor will not touch the keyboard or mouse unless absolutely necessary. In both the classroom and hands-on setting, the students will be required to run the computer.
Classroom Training
The following items will be covered in the two hour classroom segment of the training session. There should be plenty of time for the instructor to answer any questions that arise during the session and the students will be expected to ask enough questions that they understand the first Example before proceeding to the next Example.
The students may want to write notes in the manual and on the Software Tutorial handout.
- Review the first 18 pages of the WinKIC Manual including:
- Contacting KIC 24 hour technical support.
- The benefits to expect from the KIC Prophet Thermal Manager.
- Identifying the Manual pages that cover the customer's equipment.
- Review the seven Examples in the WinKIC Software Tutorial:
- The first person in the class operates the computer for Example #1 (screen layout), Example #2 (Statistics, Zoom, and Auto Scale Tools), and Example #3 (Axis Scales & Pointer Tools).
- The second person in the class runs the PC for Example #4 (KICprobes & reviewing history with VCR buttons), and Example #5 (Prediction Tool).
- The Third person does Example #6 (Virtual Profiling) and Example #7 (Loading DOS files and displaying multiple windows).
- Key Points to Remember
Hands-On Training
This two hour segment of the training session will take place on the shop floor using a solder reflow oven, wave solder machine, or other conveyorized thermal process that has been previously fitted with the KIC Prophet system. It is assumed that the KIC Prophet has been correctly installed and the WinKIC software has been loaded and properly initialized. Also, a PCB should be available with thermocouples already attached. This session builds on the knowledge acquired by the student in the classroom training. Even experienced KIC users are discouraged from taking only the hands-on training. There should be plenty of time to ask questions and the students are encouraged to do so.
The hands on training will follow the WinKIC Prophet Quick-Start Manual very closely. The students may want to write notes directly in the manual.
- Hardware Input Monitor - This tool connects the WinKIC software to the KIC hardware.
- Oven Setup - The Oven Setup is reviewed briefly to show the student how the oven was measured. The total oven length (KIC Oven Start to KIC Oven End) can be measured again as this is critical in accurately measuring the conveyor speed.
- Product Setup - The product with attached TCs is measured and input into the WinKIC software.
- Recipe Setup - The oven zone temperature setpoints and conveyor speed are entered and saved as a WinKIC recipe file.
- Running a Profile - The product is run through the oven with the SlimKIC Thermal Profiler or TC Extension recording the temperature profile and measuring the conveyor speed.
- Setting The Statistics Limits - Limits are set on the Statistics so the student can quickly determine if this profile satisfies the requirements.
- Profile Prediction - If necessary, the Profile Prediction tool is used to determine the oven setpoints and conveyor speed necessary to generate a satisfactory profile.
- Virtual Profiling - Once a Satisfactory profile is achieved, the VP tool is used to predict what the thermal profile will be for the next product to enter the oven.
- Setting VP Alarms - Limits are set and the student is shown how to immediately identify if the product thermal profile has changed.
- Entering Comments in History - Comments are entered at various points in history to identify key events.
- Searching History Files - The student is shown how to display a particular date and time in history and how to compare the historical process temperatures with the current. The Student is also shown how to quickly compare two product thermal profiles using the "Desktop from History" function.
